Corporate Media Defends $300 Million Federal Monitor Imposed On Maricopa County

Corporate Media Defends $300 Million Federal Monitor Imposed On Maricopa County

By Staff Reporter |

Corporate media is making the case that the state’s largest sheriff’s office still needs federal oversight for racial profiling.

ABC 15 aired a segment criticizing a court filing requesting an end to the decade-long federal oversight of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO). The oversight emerged from the Melendres v. Arpaio case, a class action complaint against allegedly racially motivated detentions that occurred during illegal migrant sweeps.

FOIAzona caught reporting errors made within a report by ABC 15 that no longer appears to be published, including the claim that MCSO filed the court motion.

However, it was the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors (MCBOS) who submitted that court filing earlier this month. MCBOS has budgetary power over MCSO.

In their court filing, MCBOS made the case that MCSO had long ago achieved 100 percent compliance in remedying issues of racially motivated detentions. The county argued that further federal oversight would only divert critical funds for public safety.

In a video explaining the filing, MCBOS Chairman Thomas Galvin said the end to federal oversight was long overdue.

“After 14 years, four sheriffs, and hundreds of millions of spent tax dollars, it is essential to defend taxpayer money if federal oversight is no longer warranted,” said Galvin. “All that’s left to enforce are matters unrelated to discriminatory policing which should be left to the sheriff who was elected by you: the Maricopa County residents.”

The 14 years of oversight have cost the county over $300 million in compliance. Around ten percent of those payments went to the court monitor, Robert Warshaw.

Leading up to MCBOS filing were months of allegations that Warshaw has a financial incentive to continue federal oversight of MCSO. Warshaw has earned over $30 million in monitor fees since taking on oversight of MCSO in January 2014 — around $3 million annually.

Warshaw faces similar accusations of exploiting federal oversight orders for personal gain in connection to his 15-plus years of monitoring the Oakland Police Department in California. There he earns over $1 million annually.

Warshaw has also earned millions from federal monitor assignments in New York, Michigan, and Louisiana.

Warshaw formerly served as the deputy drug czar for the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy under former President Bill Clinton.

Almost a decade ago, Judicial Watch reported on allegations that Warshaw allegedly employed “harsh” tactics that distracted from the county’s law enforcement activities.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said Warshaw’s presence is no longer warranted.

“There is no defense for this ‘federal monitor,’” said Mitchell. “One more reason I like to get my news from the non-fiction section.”

Mitchell has been a vocal critic of Warshaw’s continued presence.

“It’s time we stop talking about Joe Arpaio — he is long gone and has been replaced by 3 different sheriffs from both political parties — and start talking about why the federal monitor, Robert Warshaw, is dragging this on and on,” said Mitchell in a May post. “Maricopa taxpayers should be outraged that we are at $350 million. Warshaw has no incentive to wrap this up.”

Back in October, Congressman Andy Biggs also asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to lift MCSO’s federal oversight. Supervisors Mark Stewart and Debbie Lesko, along with Mitchell, offered their support for the letter.

OFF THE RECORD USA: Why The Media Needs Disruption Now

OFF THE RECORD USA: Why The Media Needs Disruption Now

By Carson Carpenter and Stryder Bigler |

In 2016, when Donald Trump announced his candidacy, he took the political world by storm. Trump introduced an entire generation of young men and women to a new kind of politics. His charisma and iconic moments fueled a political machine that reached its peak in the 2024 Presidential Election.

In the wake of that election, a large base of young conservative men and women, highly invested into the political state of the United States, have been left behind. While voices throughout the political sphere have sought to align themselves with this wave of young activists, the most successful have not been journalists or politicians. It’s been the content creators.

An entire generation of young adults are hungry for political content, but few understand them enough to provide it. The legacy media has abandoned the youth in support of an audience that has retained viewership. This doesn’t further any agenda but holds one captive. Creators like Dean Withers have begun to fill that void in progressive spaces, preaching politics but more importantly allowing direct open communication with his audience. That connection has created a cult-like following around these new Gen Z creators. And it’s exactly what we’re hoping to do with Off The Record USA (OTR-USA).

OTR-USA represents a platform for young conservatives, enabling them to grow and share their thoughts and opinions openly and honestly. With a goal to bring both sides closer together, we are looking for any voices, liberal or conservative, that are willing to have open and honest dialogues.

As Arizona natives, both of us have contributed to our communities. Carson graduated from ASU and has spent time developing relationships within Arizona politics, building a network of support that he used to grow ASU’s College Republicans.

Stryder is currently studying Journalism and Political Science at ASU and has contributed to several different clubs on campus, including the Emmy award-winning Walter Cronkite Sports Network.

With OTR-USA, we hope to empower young creators to amplify their messages and broaden their influence while getting to the truth in our country through investigative journalism, interviews, and connecting back to our communities.

In an age where information is easily accessible, audiences are desperate for the truth. And we will use our influence to promote the importance of loving one’s country, along with the values that make America great.

Join us, as we fight for a better future.

Beyond Politics: Arizona’s March For Life Challenges Mainstream Narrative

Beyond Politics: Arizona’s March For Life Challenges Mainstream Narrative

By Garrett Riley |

An enthusiastic, large crowd exclaimed in unison, “Everyone deserves a birthday!” The takeaway for anyone truly listening to all the speeches and observing the diversity of people and many organizations participating in the Arizona March for Life is that abortion is not merely a political issue. Every abortion decision involves layers of complicated, emotional, and often unexpectedly difficult circumstances. Every abortion choice is deeply personal, not political, and ultimately prevents the celebration of a birthday as it ends the life of an innocent human being.

Labeling those who stand for life as “anti-abortion groups” is a tiring old tactic used by activists and allies of Planned Parenthood (the mainstream media) to cast a biased label on a multifaceted pro-life movement. This narrative fails to capture the essence of what we represent and stand for. What the mainstream media doesn’t show or tell you about us is proof that it is not objective and is nearly universally supportive of on-demand abortion.

The gap between the portrayal of the pro-life movement and its true intentions was evident following the Arizona March for Life, held near the state capitol last Friday in Phoenix. More than 3,000 citizens gathered to express a collective commitment to “Walk With Every Woman, For Every Child,” aiming to shift the conversation toward making abortion unthinkable and highlighting support for women facing unplanned pregnancies.

With a radical abortion rights initiative underway in our state, this topic necessarily received the right proportion of the rally’s content and agenda. This was especially important given the stark reality that the broad language in the proposed constitutional amendment could eventually lead to the elimination of Arizona’s common-sense abortion restrictions and regulations, effectively allowing for legalized abortions through all nine months.

As the election cycle unfolds in 2024, heavy press coverage on this subject matter is understandable.

Unfortunately, most of the media limited their coverage to this aspect of the event, organized locally by the Arizona Life Coalition. This narrow lens, which seems intentional, failed to show the wide range of engagement from nonpolitical people and organizations. People from all regions of the state, from every walk of life, showed up to advocate for life. More than 30 exhibitors were present, including abortion healing groups, churches, schools, pregnancy help centers, medical, adoption, and foster care organizations.

General media bias through exclusion was evident, with virtually no mention of the other powerful speakers, including former nurse Kim Owens, whose beliefs were transformed by the profound realization of the humanity of an unborn child during an abortion procedure. Her testimony, along with that of Life Choices Women’s Clinic director, Sheila Riely, and her client, holding her beautiful baby in her arms, told the story of how she changed her mind and gave birth instead of aborting. Finally, Pastor Mike Goodwin from Emanuel Baptist Church in Tucson, encouraged compassion and forgiveness as perhaps the better way to change more hearts and minds about abortion, underscoring the rally’s deeper spiritual and moral dimensions.

We rallied and marched for life last Friday to confront the lies of abortion with truth. It’s a lie that elective abortion is women’s healthcare. It’s deceptive to define abortion as a medical procedure that terminates a pregnancy.

The truth is, “terminating a pregnancy” is just a euphemism for the reality that abortion intentionally destroys the innocent life of a helpless unborn baby.

The truth is abortion is the most blatant human rights violation in the history of mankind. In the last year, there were 11,530 abortions in Arizona as reported by the Arizona Department of Health Services. That’s an average of 221 innocent and defenseless babies killed by abortion every week in Arizona.

This deeply saddens me, but it was encouraging to see children, young adults, and seniors rally. I met one passionate woman who is 91 years old. What’s more, giving me great hope was the huge turnout of homeschool kids, local high schoolers, and groups from Grand Canyon University and Arizona Christian University, all marching for life. There were even students who wrote essays, created posters, and made pro-life videos for a contest sponsored by the Arizona Life Coalition. All these committed young pro-lifers make up generations of a society that will someday absolutely respect and protect the rights of ALL HUMAN BEINGS, born and unborn.

The press and general media’s skewed representation of the pro-life movement cannot diminish the power of personal resolve and the collective spirit that drives our cause. We stand on a foundation of science, reason, morality, and faith. So, it is imperative that we elevate the conversation beyond political divisions. Don’t be swayed by shallow narratives but instead, contemplate the truth, that indeed, everyone deserves a birthday.

The Resignation Of Gilbert’s Digital Government Chief Is A Big Victory For Independent Media

The Resignation Of Gilbert’s Digital Government Chief Is A Big Victory For Independent Media

By the Arizona Free Enterprise Club |

Government leaders must be held accountable. That’s supposed to be the job of the mainstream media. But somewhere along the line, this changed. Many journalists employed by traditional corporate media started to twist facts to drive home a particular narrative. Others began disguising their own opinions as news. And some just stopped doing any real investigations altogether—choosing to protect our elected officials and government bureaucrats from any sort of real accountability.

Now, with fewer people trusting in the mainstream media, our nation has seen a rise in independent news media. We have a great one right here in Arizona called AZ Free News that has shown it is willing to do real research and investigation into what is happening in our state. And their latest investigative report shows exactly why independent journalism is critical for the future of our state and nation…
