Arizona’s Democratic congressional leaders voted against protecting females in sports from the intrusion of males identifying as females.
HR 28, the “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025,” passed the House on Tuesday with 218 votes, with full support from Arizona’s Republican congressmen.
206 members voted against the bill, all Democrats. Freshman congresswoman Yassamin Ansari joined her veteran colleague Greg Stanton in a “no” vote on the legislation. Raúl Grijalva was one of nine members recorded as “not voting.”
During the House floor debate on the bill, Ansari pushed the claim of her congressional Democratic peers that HR 28 was a “Child Predator Empowerment Act” (per a sign the party propped up during arguments) that would endanger children.
“Everyone in this room knows that this legislation has the power to threaten the physical and mental safety of minors. Schools and athletic institutions already have rules around fairness and safety in children’s sports. This is literally why we have the NCAA,” said Ansari. “This bill is textbook government overreach meant to fuel division. Further, this bill provides no enforcement guidelines, insinuating Republicans are just fine with subjecting young women and girls to invasive, humiliating medical examinations and physical inspections. This is an attack on the physical and mental safety of all girls in this country as young as kindergarten.”
Days ahead of the vote, Ansari issued a statement online warning of “ongoing attacks on the rights and dignity of the LGBTQI+ community.” Both Ansari and Stanton have been consistent defenders of LGBTQI+ ideology. Ansari, Grijalva, and Stanton are all members of the Equality Caucus.
The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025 amends federal law (the Education Amendments of 1972) to preclude federal financial aid recipients operating, sponsoring, or facilitating an athletic program or activity from permitting males to participate in athletic programs or activities designated for females.
The bill defines sex as an individual’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.
HR 28 does allow for males to train or practice with female-designated athletic programs or activities, so long as the male participation doesn’t deprive any female of a scholarship, roster spot on a team or sport, competition or practice participation, admission to an educational institution, or other benefits derived from participation in an athletic program or activity.
HR 28 also directs the Comptroller General to conduct a study on the benefits of females participating in female-designated sports, and the potential “psychological, developmental, participatory, and sociological” harms that emerge from male participation. The comptroller general would then submit the results to the Committee on Education and Workforce of the House of Representatives as well as the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions of the Senate.
The act made quick progress through the House upon its reintroduction earlier this month by Florida Congressman Greg Steube. The congressman invoked Scripture and science during Tuesday’s arguments over the bill on the House floor, arguing that “the radical left” was intent on “dismantling the core of society” by normalizing gender ideology.
“Scripture reminds us that at the beginning of time, God created mankind as males and females and he blessed them. All throughout humanity we have recognized that there are men and there are women as God created, who are obviously biologically different and, dare I say, scientifically different,” said Steube. “Yet our culture and civilization continue to be subjected to the perverse lie that there are more than two genders, or that men can be women or women can be men.”

How much do you like to walk in 110-degree heat? If you’re a resident of the city of Phoenix, you may need to start getting used to it if the city council gets its way.
A proposed ordinance in Phoenix is looking to significantly reduce the minimum number of parking spaces it requires for apartments. Currently, Phoenix requires a minimum of 150 parking spaces for every 100 one or two-bedroom apartments. Under the proposed ordinance, that number would decrease to 125 spaces. But that’s not the end of it. For new affordable apartment complexes near light rail stations, the requirement for most would be reduced to zero! Yes. Zero parking spaces at an apartment complex. Have you caught on to their agenda yet?
If you’ve been keeping score, you already know that—in just this year—climate change zealots have been seeking to prohibit gas stoves; put limits on things like lawn and garden equipment, motorized boating, and water heaters; and ban the internal combustion engine. Now, this latest attempt to reduce parking spaces makes it clear. They want to force you out of your air-conditioned car to walk in 110-degree heat with your reward being to wait for a bus or light rail. But that’s not all…

Following the latest two homicides to occur in The Zone, downtown Phoenix’s notorious homeless encampment, city leaders say they plan to convene to take action. There were no further details offered of when or where this meeting will occur; the next policy session, scheduled for April 11, was canceled.
A city spokesperson told AZ Family that these latest violent acts prompted their pending meeting.
“Our urgent priority is helping connect unsheltered individuals around [the] Human Services Campus with safe, indoor housing options and resources to end homelessness,” stated the spokesperson.
The spokesperson also noted that the city added nearly 600 new shelter beds last year, and projected that 800 will be available through this year. There are over 1,000 estimated homeless individuals in The Zone.
The first victim of the latest murders, a man, was discovered around 8 am on Tuesday. Police told Fox 10 Phoenix that they were unable to identify the victim due to the burn injuries. Two men were arrested as suspects in the crime: 18-year-old Isaiah Baskin, and 22-year-old Larry Scott.
Baskin alleged that he played a role in the crime: he allegedly witnessed Scott and another, unidentified individual assault the victim, then assisted them in bagging, transporting, and dumping the victim into a dumpster. Baskin reportedly told police that he could hear the victim moaning inside the dumpster. Then, Baskin admitted that he retrieved a lighter which Scott used to set the victim on fire.
Around 48 hours after the first victim’s death, the second victim of the latest murders, a woman, was shot. Officers responded to a call from a man alleging that someone hit him in the head with a gun before shooting the woman. The woman later died due to her injuries at a hospital. A suspect has yet to be named.
Vice Mayor Yassamin Ansari, whose district encompasses The Zone, didn’t issue a public statement on the two murders. However, she did share a New York Times article highlighting the plights of several homeless and business owners in the area.
There were over 700 homeless deaths in the area last year — an uptick of several hundred from 2021.
Per AZ Free News reporting on The Zone, the incessant daily crime has reached levels unmanageable by police. First responders have assessed the area as too dangerous to enter without police escort. Gangs run the streets, making the homeless pay for tent space and assaulting them as punishment.
Not all leadership appeared to be as fazed by the state of The Zone.
Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, hours after the initial murder — a man burned alive in a dumpster — called the area “not great” and suggested that constituents “go buy a sandwich” from a restaurant located within The Zone.
Comparatively, attorney general candidate Abe Hamadeh compared Phoenix to Gotham: the fictional, crime-ridden city of Batman lore.
