Arizona House Republicans are voicing extreme displeasure with President Biden’s border policies.
On Friday, Arizona House Speaker Ben Toma and 30 of his colleagues in the chamber sent a letter to President Joe Biden, demanding that the Democrat Commander in Chief “reverse your policy and put a halt to the wide-open door for so-called ‘asylum-seekers.’”

The reason for the letter stemmed from the decision from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to close the Lukeville Port of Entry earlier this week. The Lukeville section of the border, inside the Tucson Sector, has recently become the epicenter of the historic crisis, seeing thousands of illegal aliens pour into the United States through gaps in the fence. In their letter, the Arizona lawmakers wrote that “the closure has caused an immediate collapse of economic activity and legal movement through that critical port of entry,” adding that “Arizonans along the way to Lukeville will needlessly suffer as businesses shutter in communities such as Gila Bend, Ajo, and Why.”
Speaker Toma said, “Securing the border is supposed to be the federal government’s job. But the willful inaction by President Biden is causing irreparable harm. Arizona’s Democratic leaders, Governor Hobbs and Attorney General Mayes, also ignore calls to defend the state and hold the federal government accountable. When Republicans in the Legislature specifically funded a mission of the National Guard to provide support to law enforcement on the border, Governor Hobbs cut that mission short to instead aid the transportation and housing of illegal aliens. Arizonans can count on House Republicans to pursue meaningful policy and budgetary solutions in the upcoming legislative session to protect Arizona’s border, border communities, and the people we are elected to represent.”
The letter from the Arizona legislators included several reasons why the state of Arizona – and other neighboring states – have been negatively affected by the border crisis. It noted that “border states in particular are significantly harmed by your administration’s failed policies every day. Our law enforcement agencies at the border are overextended. Health care providers in border communities are overworked to such an extent that they are struggling to provide essential services to the residents of their community in need of care.”
As they closed the letter, the Arizona State Representatives warned that they would “hold (President Biden) accountable for your refusal to protect this nation and its people.”
Over the course of this year, Arizona Legislative Republicans have repeatedly directed their ire to national and local Democrats over the unprecedented situation at the border. Earlier this fall, soon after the horrific terrorist attack in Israel on October 7, Senate President Warren Petersen issued a statement, saying, “Our own country must remain vigilant, as our wide open border, ignored by Joe Biden and Democrats, remains one of the greatest threats to our national security.”
In May, freshman Representative Austin Smith visited the border to gain first-hand knowledge. After his trip, he posted, “Eye opening experience down here on the border. Joe Biden and Mayorkas are derelict in their duty to our country. Absolutely shameful.”

A smaller coalition of state representatives, led by Gail Griffin, also sent a letter to Governor Hobbs in May, calling on Arizona’s chief executive “to take immediate action and activate all state resources to keep our communities safe from these dangerous and unprecedented threats.” The group of five legislators pointed to a February 22 legal opening from then-Attorney General Mark Brnovich, which documented “the federal government’s failure to uphold its duty to defend the States from invasion – particularly at Arizona’s border with Mexico – by drug cartels and gangs’ violence, lawlessness, and trafficking of deadly illicit drugs, such as fentanyl.”

Back in February, Representative Tim Dunn reacted to the president’s State of the Union address, stating that it failed “to address the emergency effecting the southern border. This can end by changing his policy. This allows fentanyl to come to your neighborhood. Secure the border protect our airways from China and open up oil exploration to curb inflation.”

Though the border crisis appears to be worsening by the day, legislative Republicans have effectively made the point that the reality for Arizonans could be more daunting if not for their check on the Democrats in the state – especially Governor Katie Hobbs. When Hobbs signed the state budget compromise in May, Senate President Petersen highlighted that his members “prevented the Governor and Democrat Legislators from advancing their extremist agenda…we’re not getting rid of state funded border security resources to keep our communities safe.” In the upcoming session, starting next month, expect Republicans to continue to introduce bills and policies that would give the Grand Canyon State more ability and resources to combat the many scourges of the border crisis.

If you look up “failure” in the dictionary, it’s probably only a matter of time until you start seeing images of Katie Hobbs’ time as Governor of Arizona. Hobbs kicked off her reign back in January and immediately got off to a rocky start. After being in office for just over a month, Hobbs had her inauguration fund called into question, had her pick to lead the Arizona Democratic Party rejected, and was booed at the 16th Hole of the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
If that wasn’t enough, Hobbs’ nominations for agency directors have been a complete disaster. Her pick to lead the Department of Health Services, Dr. Theresa Cullen, was rejected for her COVID imperialism. Her nominee for Housing Director was rejected due to a history of plagiarism. And she was forced to withdraw her nominee for Arizona Registrar of Contractors, former Democratic State Senator Martín Quezada, over his alliance with antisemitic extremism. It’s no wonder why Hobbs was listed as one of the least popular governors in the nation.
That’s probably why Hobbs is willing to do anything she can to get some good publicity, but her latest stunt was another misfire…and broke the law…
Arizona’s Republican legislative leaders are wading into another fight with the President of the United States over a recent federal land grab.
On Monday, Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen and House Speaker Ben Toma announced that they “filed an amicus curiae in the case of Garfield County v. Biden.” The case, led by Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes, involves President Joe Biden’s “unilateral move in 2021 of declaring more than 3 million acres of land in the southern part of the state now representing two ‘national monuments.’” Arizona’s leaders are supporting the State of Utah’s position that the president’s action here violates the Antiquities Act. After a District Court Judge sided with the White House, Utah appealed the decision, leading to additional briefing.

“It is time for the courts to weigh in and stop this federal corruption. Joe Biden’s unlawful maneuvers in both Utah and Arizona promise to wreak havoc on our local economies, the livelihoods of our citizens, and our national security. His end goal is to pander to radical environmentalists by ending mining, ranching and other local uses of federal lands. This has nothing to do with protecting actual artifacts,” said Senate President Petersen. “This federal overreach is unconstitutional, unacceptable, and sets a dangerous precedent. In the absence of Arizona’s Attorney General fighting back against Biden’s dictator-style land grabs, the Arizona Legislature is stepping up to protect our communities. We ultimately anticipate this issue will make its way to the U.S. Supreme Court where the president’s abuse of power will be reined in.”
In their brief, Petersen and Toma argue that “the President does not have discretion to declare anything an ‘object’ under the Antiquities Act” because the law “is a type of conditional legislation that limits the President to ascertaining whether something is objectively an object of historic or scientific interest” and “Constitutional concerns underscore the need to limit the President’s discretion under the Act.” The legislators also assert that “Courts are not powerless to stop the President’s clear abuses of power.”
The lawmakers make the case that “the power that the President claims here is an expansive and aggressive assertion of executive authority. If his reading of the Antiquities Act is right, the only thing preventing the President from declaring all federal land a national monument is his self-restraint; after all, all federal lands have landscapes that, according to President Biden, are an ‘object of historic or scientific interest…’ Such a power, with its attendant consequences for the use of the land, is plainly one ‘of vast economic and political significance.’”
The case is currently before the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.

On Wednesday, October 11, Arizonans learned the budget Katie Hobbs signed into law will possibly have a $400 million shortfall. This means the state won’t have enough money to fund the budget because it’s too big and is spending too much money.
The left wants to blame the budget shortfall on the implementation of former Governor Ducey’s state income flat tax a couple years ago. They also demonize the families participating in the state school choice ESA program. However, if it weren’t for Hobbs’ spending increase of $2 billion and vetoing a $2 billion smaller budget, the state would still have an outlook with a budget surplus.
Let’s review the short history.
In June of 2022, Arizona Governor Ducey signed into law the Fiscal Year 2023 Arizona Budget. The Radical Left and then-Secretary of State Katie Hobbs praised that budget for being bipartisan.
Moving ahead to the most recent 2023 legislative session, Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen and Speaker of the House Ben Toma wanted the new legislature to prioritize their most important responsibility — the state budget. Accordingly, in February, the state legislature passed a continuation of the same $15.8 billion budget from 2022.
Hobbs vetoed it. The budget Hobbs vetoed is the same as the one she applauded after Ducey signed it into law. This year, Hobbs called the budget partisan and extreme. The budget Hobbs decided was good enough to sign into law was $17.8 billion, exactly $2 billion larger than the budget she vetoed.
Hobbs insisted on a budget that is $2 billion larger even while many economists predicted Arizona and the nation are at risk for an economic slowdown due to rising interest rates. Forbes reported, “At the end of 2022, the National Association of Realtors predicted a 15.8% drop in combined sales and prices for the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale [housing] market in 2023.”
The Federal Reserve, the nation’s central bank, currently shows the median home price in the United States is collapsing faster than any other point in recorded history.
If a recession occurs, Arizona will see less tax revenue. This would also have a negative impact on the budget’s revenue because people are spending less money; therefore, the state is collecting less in taxes.
While the Radical Left wants to blame the budgetary shortfall on the flat tax that benefits everyone, one thing is clear. The state of Arizona is spending too much money, and Hobbs’ extra $2 billion budget is destroying Arizona. It is her fault.

Arizona’s Republican legislative leaders continue to come to the unwavering aid of the state’s Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) Program.
After the ESA program sustained another political attack from Democrat Governor Katie Hobbs, House Speaker Ben Toma released a statement in support of the landmark school choice expansion for the state. Toma said, “Governor Hobbs continues to blast the ESA program as unsustainable and exceeding estimates. Neither are true. We remind the Governor that she leads the entire state of Arizona, and if she seeks changes to the ESA program, she ought to propose serious policies, not tweet vague threats. The State Legislature has yet to see any policy proposals from her office. Arizona will continue to responsibly fund students, not systems.”

According to the Speaker’s press release, “the Department of Education reported on October 4 that the budget is currently on pace to have a year-end surplus of roughly $77 million,” adding that “the budget estimate of 68,000 total users (in the ESA program) is within 1% of the current program enrollment.”
The Speaker’s defense of ESAs came soon after Hobbs unleashed another attack against it, claiming that the program “threatens to decimate our state’s budget.” In a post on the platform “X,” Governor Hobbs stated, “The school voucher program is unaccountable and unsustainable. It does not save taxpayers money, and it does not provide a better education for Arizona students…I call on Superintendent Horne, Speaker Toma, and President Petersen to join with bipartisan leaders to pass accountability and transparency measures, and bring an end to this wasteful, runaway spending.”

Horne and Petersen also took time to respond to the governor’s assertions, pushing back against her allegations and supporting the integrity of the program. Horne said, “The Governor’s calculation is in error. She is counting the $7,200 paid for each ESA student without offsetting the $13,000 paid per student that would otherwise be spent for that student to attend a public school. The overall numbers bear this out as the expenditures for all public-school spending, including the ESA program are $72 million below budget.”
Petersen added, “Arizona families want choices for their children’s education. ESAs are one of many choices the Legislature is prioritizing. The fact is, we budgeted for the 68,000 kids currently enrolled and have responsibly planned for incremental spending increases for this program in the years to come, as we do with a variety of other programs in our overall budget. We’re always open to improving our state’s programs, but for the sake of Arizona families who want to choose the best educational settings to meet their children’s needs, ESAs are here to stay.”
Since failing to address ESA changes in the state’s budget, which was passed earlier this year, Governor Hobbs has increased her political volleys against the program, joining allies who were enraged at her perceived capitulation to Republican lawmakers. As a new legislative session nears, Hobbs and her staff will likely be more focused on exacting some concessions when the next round of budget negotiations resume in 2024. Ultimately, Arizona voters will have a significant role in determining the direction of the state’s ESA program, whether by changes to the political party make-up of the legislature or through a yet-to-be-filed ballot initiative.
