Gov. Katie Hobbs is rumored to have picked the leader of the Republicans for Harris movement to serve as her lieutenant governor should she win in November.
Unnamed sources toldThe New York Times that Hobbs picked John Giles as her running mate, a former Republican and the mayor of Mesa from 2014 to 2025. Giles co-chaired Republicans for Harris, a campaign advisory committee for 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
Multiple media outlets reported that Giles was a “moderate Republican,” but voter records reflect that Giles changed his voter registration to be an independent back in May and voted in this year’s Democratic primary.
Giles was initially reported to be among a handful of candidates that had allegedly rejected Hobbs’ request, according to sources cited in earlier reporting by The New York Times.
Giles has been a consistent supporter of Hobbs leading up to and throughout her governorship.
Giles served on Hobbs’ transition team; as our reporting noted, Giles was one of several on the team with connections to a fellow transition team member running a nonprofit under investigation for pandemic loan fraud. Giles had backed a proposition put forth by that nonprofit granting in-state college tuition to illegal aliens.
Giles also issued a statement commending the governor on her first 100 days in office.
During the 2024 election, Giles was promoted as leading a coalition of Arizona Republicans campaigning for Harris via their communications director at the time, Delaney Corcoran, who is currently Attorney General Kris Mayes’ campaign manager and until recently, Mayes’ deputy communications director. Giles described President Donald Trump as the “path of political extremism.”

Giles’ public commitment to the Harris campaign occurred following a widely circulated guest column in the Arizona Republic in which he criticized pro-life and pro-gun policies as “far-right” threats to constitutional rights.
“Trump poses a serious threat to our nation. We can’t have a felon representing us on the national stage, let alone one who would threaten to abandon NATO and ruin our standing abroad,” wrote Giles in the column. “Kamala Harris is the competent, just and fair leader our country deserves. This year too much is at stake to vote Republican at the top of the ticket.”
While mayor of Mesa, Giles implemented the Off the Streets program, which provides 90-day transitional housing to the homeless using roughly $14 million in pandemic relief funds. Under Giles’ tenure and following the program’s launch in 2021, the homeless population increased by 31%. Giles structured the program using the Built for Zero approach promoted by the nonprofit Community Solutions.
Giles also ensured Mesa was the first in the state to have a Google data center.
Following Harris’s loss and his departure from the mayor’s office, it appears Giles’ involvement with Arizona Republicans for Harris concluded.
Arizona campaign finance records reflect just one expenditure mentioning Giles’ Arizona Republicans for Harris group: a $600 cash payment from the Democrats of Rim County to the organization in September 2024 for signs. The address for Giles’ group was listed as “Unknown, Phoenix, AZ, 85001.”
It appears Arizona Republicans for Harris was absorbed or combined with a political action committee (PAC) that helped Joe Biden win the presidency in 2020, Arizona Republicans Who Believe In Treating Others With Respect.
Daniel Barker, retired Arizona Court of Appeals judge and leader within the Maricopa County Mormon community, co-founded the PAC with his wife, Nan, in 2020.
No campaign finance records for the PAC were available as of this report on the Arizona secretary of state website. Federal Election Commission (FEC) records report the entity to be an active super PAC which reported raising more than $470,000 in 2024. Nearly half of those funds — $200,000 — came from the revocable trust belonging to Democratic Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker. $125,000 came from Justin Durand, a Mesa guest ranch owner.
Most of the funds raised went to supporting the Harris campaign.

At the national scale, Republicans for Harris has since rebranded as “Maverick,” a group of “bold centrists fighting for America.” It is maintained by Reed Howard, who formerly ran Young Republicans for Harris and currently serves as chief strategy officer for the Future Caucus.
Gov. Katie Hobbs confirmed that the rumors of her lieutenant governor pick were true: John Giles is her running mate.
Hobbs went public with her decision the weekend following an initial deadline from the secretary of state’s office, reportedly established to ensure the state had adequate time for ballot printing.
Giles is the former mayor of Mesa and a recently registered independent who voted in the Democratic primary this year. Giles voted for Joe Biden in 2020, endorsed Sen. Mark Kelly in 2022, and Kamala Harris in 2024.
During the 2024 election, Giles led the Arizona Republicans for Harris organization and spoke at the Democratic National Convention. Giles said in Tuesday’s announcement that those with the Republican Party were “extremists” that prevented good governance.
“I was a lifelong Republican before becoming an independent because extremists shouldn’t stand in the way of getting things done,” said Giles.

Not long after going public as Hobbs’ running mate, Giles announced he would fall in line with Hobbs’ preferred non-engagement approach to campaigning and announced he would not be participating in any public debates.
Sine Kerr, Republican nominee Andy Biggs’ running mate, had stated shortly after Hobbs’ reveal that she was eager to debate Giles.
“We should discuss my Arizona Women’s Bill of Rights legislation and SB1583, which protected children from predators,” said Kerr. “Katie Hobbs vetoed both. Maybe John Giles can explain why.”
Kerr said Hobbs and Giles avoiding debates was unfair to voters.
“It’s really unfortunate that they don’t want to stand for a debate. They don’t want to answer tough questions,” Kerr said. “I think it’s very disrespectful to the people, to the voters of Arizona.”
The Arizona Clean Election Commission scheduled a debate between the lieutenant governor picks to occur on October 5.

Hobbs told Arizona’s Family that she selected Giles because he, too, has a history of governing beyond political party.
“I believe Arizonans deserve leadership that puts them ahead of the partisan politics. That’s how I’ve governed,” said Hobbs.
Hobbs dismissed the notion that issues facing Arizonans, including traditionally partisan ones like abortion, were not actually partisan.
“[P]rotecting reproductive freedom, which is not a partisan issue. It’s something that a vast majority of Arizonans support. We’re on the same page,” said Hobbs.
Giles said that the topic of abortion should be left to the voters, which is why he supported Proposition 139.
“I’m a Republican with standards,” said Giles. “In recent years, I felt like some of the folks at the top of the ticket and the Republican Party were just below the bar with regard to character and commitment to the Constitution and rule of law.”
Many of Giles’ most significant policies and initiatives as mayor of Mesa aligned with Democratic Party priorities. In some cases, Giles preempted Hobbs on progressive policy.
In 2021, Giles led the passage of an ordinance to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the protected classes in the city’s nondiscrimination laws. The ordinance was similar to those adopted by the cities of Phoenix, Flagstaff, Tempe, and, later, Chandler.
Residents opposed to the ordinance cited concerns of males entering spaces historically reserved for females, such as restrooms and locker rooms, and that businesses would face religious persecution. Giles dismissed those concerns as not based in reality and told those opponents that the city had considered the ordinance since he joined as a city council member in 2014. About two years later, Hobbs’ first executive order prohibited gender identity discrimination.
“We’re not breaking any ground here,” said Giles. “This ordinance is moderate and reflects the input from the community. This is a mainstream ordinance that hasn’t been dictated to us from any outside groups.”

Arizona Senator Jake Hoffman recently responded to the launch of an Arizona chapter of “Republicans For Harris” with a blistering comment.
In his scorching post to X, Hoffman quipped “Strange… I thought prostitution was illegal in Arizona.” He advised his fellow Republicans to “Ignore these whores,” and asserted confidently, “Donald J. Trump will win Arizona.”

In the image shared by Delaney Corcoran, Communications Director for the Harris campaign, Mesa Mayor John Giles is shown headlining the rally. “Our party used to stand for the belief that every Arizonan, no matter their background or circumstances, should have the freedom, opportunity and security to live out their American Dream,” he wrote, in his endorsement of Harris according to The Hill.
“But since Donald Trump refused to accept the outcome of the 2020 election, Republicans have yet to course correct,” Giles claimed. “The Republican Party with Trump at its helm continues down the path of political extremism, away from focusing on our fundamental freedoms.”
Expressing a similar sentiment, former Maricopa County GOP Chair Tyler Bowyer wrote, “For those not aware— John Giles is not a real Republican. He sold out in exchange for switching his party later to run for Congress next term to replace Democrat Greg Stanton in CD4. This is simple backroom politicking. He is supporting the most radical leftist ticket ever.”

In the aftermath of his initial comment, Hoffman addressed concerns over his choice of words from one commenter Kenny Jacobs, writing, “This commie is crying because I used textbook definitions to describe fake Republicans who’ve decided their virtue signaling and future pay day is more important than your future[.] Sorry losers Pimp yourself out to the Left at the expense of hardworking Americans… you’re a whore.”

He cited The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language 5th Edition definition of “Prostitute” which reads, “A person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain.
Hoffman is currently one of several defendants in an ongoing organized lawfare campaign by Arizona’s Democrat Attorney General Kris Mayes. He is being prosecuted for his 2020 role on the GOP slate of alternate electors who prepared documentation to be presented to Congress in the event that the slate favoring President Joe Biden was rejected.
In a more recent post, he has also revealed a letter from an Instagram whistleblower with nearly 150k followers, “exposing a sophisticated Astroturfing effort underway by the Harris-Walz campaign. Social media users are being PAID to post pro Harris-Walz content on Instagram.”
Vice President Kamala Harris and her vice-presidential pick, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, will be coming to campaign in Arizona on Friday. Details of their visit are forthcoming.
Harris and Walz will be visiting a little over a week after Trump’s vice presidential pick, Ohio Senator JD Vance, addressed Arizonans in Glendale.
Harris and Walz will come to Phoenix, but details of the exact location and time have not yet been released.
The visit comes shortly after Harris passed over Senator Mark Kelly as her running mate pick. Kelly put his support behind Walz on Tuesday, and disclosed to his supporters that he didn’t believe he would be the pick.
“I never expected to find myself in this position,” said Kelly.

Former Governor Doug Ducey toldThe New York Post in an interview this week that Harris and the Biden administration have been the worst on handling the border. Ducey served as governor under former Presidents Barack Obama as well as Donald Trump, as well as Biden.
Ducey asserted that Harris had failed on handling the border and ought to answer for it as a presidential candidate; Biden tasked Harris with handling the illegal immigration crisis in the first months of Biden’s term, resulting in the widespread acknowledgment of her being the “border czar.”
“She’s never been to Arizona’s border to this date. And that is an issue that she has failed on,” said Ducey. “This was all avoidable with attention to the border, and this is something that Kamala Harris will have to answer for in this presidential campaign.”
Not all Republican leaders have been so critical of Harris. They are part of an organized Harris campaign effort to win over voters in this swing state, similar to one launched four years ago by the Biden campaign.
Mesa’s registered Republican mayor, John Giles, endorsed Harris in a widely-reported guest column last month with The Arizona Republic. Giles also happens to be Mormon, and reported as part of growing Mormon support for Harris over Trump.
Giles cited Trump’s response to the 2020 election results as his main reason for opposing the Republican nominee. Giles also claimed that Arizona had benefited from Biden administration policies such as massive funding for infrastructure and semiconductor development. Giles also criticized pro-life and pro-gun policies as “far-right” threats to rights and freedoms.

Giles has endorsed Democrats for several election cycles to date, as Arizona GOP Chairwoman Gina Swoboda later clarified in a response statement.
“The Mayor has been endorsing Democrats for several election cycles now. This isn’t news, and it certainly doesn’t warrant any of our attention,” said Swoboda. “At the AZGOP, we are focused on expanding support and addressing issues that matter most to Arizonans and the American people.”
Giles gave $100 to Lorena Austin in April, the state’s first nonbinary and gender nonconforming elected official who made headlines recently for hosting an all-ages drag show fundraiser.
Giles also joined as the co-chair of the Arizona chapter to a newly-formed Harris campaign advisory committee, “Republicans for Harris,” which held a press conference earlier this week on their goal to “Stop Trump.”

The other co-chair of this “campaign within a campaign” within Arizona is Robin Shaw, a former state representative who served in the 1990s. Shaw also campaigned against Trump in the 2020 election alongside the Lincoln Project as part of the “Republicans for Biden” movement.
One of the most notable members of that 2020 movement for Biden was former Senator Jeff Flake.
Former Scottsdale Mayor Sam Campana was also presented as a member of the Republicans for Harris effort.

The woman who announced the widely-reported Republicans for Harris press conference, Delaney Corcoran, runs the Harris campaign’s Arizona communications (she ran the Biden campaign’s Arizona communications from March until his announcement to drop out last month). Prior to posting up in Arizona, Corcoran was the communications director and spokesperson for Massachusetts’ Secretary of Education.

The Biden administration publicly lauded the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine — but privately, they shared concerns similar to those they worked to dissuade.
A text exchange released during an ongoing congressional investigation into Dr. Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, revealed that the doctor was aware that COVID-19 vaccines could cause miscarriages. Fauci texted Rochelle Walensky, former Centers for Disease Control director, that the side effects from the vaccine could be severe enough to kill an unborn child.
“[A]nother issue came up that you need to be aware of,” wrote Fauci. “Since many people have significant cytokines storm and fever after the second dose, this theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester.”
And yet, several months later, Walensky issued a public advisory urging pregnant women to get the COVID-19 vaccine and claiming it was safe for their unborn children.
“Importantly, no safety concerns were observed for people vaccinated in the third trimester or safety concerns for their babies. As such, CDC recommends pregnant people receive the COVID-19 vaccine,” said Walensky.
Despite privately texting with Fauci about their concerns regarding COVID shots for pregnant women, Rochelle Walensky told the public on April 23, 2021:
President Joe Biden gave Fauci a full and unconditional pardon for any federal offenses in which he may have committed or participated from Jan. 1, 2014, to Jan. 19, 2025.
Last week, a Senate committee voted to hold Fauci in contempt. The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee called Fauci to testify on his handling of COVID-19. Fauci refused to answer most questions. He invoked his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent more than 100 times during the three-hour hearing.
Rep. Andy Biggs (AZ-05) was not only one of the first to condemn Fauci for his refusal to engage with Congress — he was one of the first elected officials to push back against the COVID-19 response under Fauci.
Biggs spoke early and often during the COVID-19 pandemic advocating against prolonged shutdowns and enforced mandates.
In April 2020 — just one month into what would become a three-year emergency declaration peppered with mandates of masks, vaccines, quarantines, curfews, and shutdowns — Biggs issued an op-ed urging the federal government to end the shutdown.
“It’s time for a new approach, one that values and protects all life,” wrote Biggs at the time. “We must give hope to the public and set forth a plan to reopen the economy and remove oppressive government restrictions. Right now, the cure is proving worse than the disease itself.”
For the first few years of the pandemic, Biggs chaired the House Freedom Caucus. While in that role and as a member of the Congressional Task Force on Reopening the American Economy, Biggs challenged the growing responsibilities of bureaucrats regarding the pandemic. Biggs demanded the disbanding of the Coronavirus Task Force in July 2020 on the claim that Fauci and his cohorts were intentionally undermining Trump’s efforts to roll back COVID-19 restrictions and reopen the economy.
Biggs was also one of the few in Congress to vote against the COVID-19 relief funds that now, years later, have gone beyond their pandemic purpose and been farmed out to fulfill various elected officials’ policy wish lists, like Gov. Katie Hobbs canceling medical debt and her rumored lieutenant governor pick John Giles establishing a homeless housing program that coincided with a 31% surge in homelessness.
Biggs then co-authored another op-ed in May 2020, again calling for an end to the shutdown and accusing Fauci of intentionally curbing American freedoms. In the early days of the pandemic, Fauci had promised the shutdown would last two weeks to flatten the curve.
